- Sheikh Ahmed Ismail Yassin (June 28, 1936 - March 22, 2004) was a preacher, a mujahid, one of the leaders of the Islamic call in Palestine, the founder and president of the largest Islamic university, including the Islamic Academy in Gaza, and the founder of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and its leader until his death. He was born in the village of Al-Joura, in the Al-Majdal District, south of the Gaza Strip. He took refuge with his family in the Gaza Strip after the 1948 war.
